When earthquakes and tsunami devastated different parts of Japan in early 2011, I designed a set of bold syllabic characters in modern kana script depicting the word “Endure” in response to the humbling spirit and solidarity that the people of Japan displayed during the crisis. The symbols were utilized on the popular design news and inspiration aggregator blog FormFiftyFive as its traditional “banner of the week” from 3/21/2011 to 3/27/2011. Usually, the banner links to the portfolio of the designer or illustrator who made it, but in this case all clicks on my banner were directed to the Red Cross donation page for the tsunami disaster.

<description>In 2010, I was contracted by Alex Haigh to help him produce a colossal amount of digital material for his then-new font foundry, HypeForType. The work had me making hundreds of specimens, thumbnails, and other images to be used in Alex’s reimagining and relaunch of HypeForType’s website. I constantly drew from over 3000 new typefaces set to be released with the new site design to produce the materials, quickly discovering and mastering ways to overcome the large workload and manage the giant library of fonts.

During this time, I worked on several other projects under Alex, including the website for TypePong (a game for iOS, now defunct) and FindFonts. I also developed dozens of email newsletters for HypeForType after the release of the newly redesigned site, helped with networking for the first big campaign, and handled a fair deal of the copywriting.

While creating the hundreds of new specimens needed for all the incoming fonts, I took many happy liberties in the choosing of words and phrases—many times from lyrics and quotes that inspired me during the time—and I was, for the most part, in complete control of how the specimens ought to look. I tried to compliment every typeface, giving them a unique environment and set of colors that matched the moods and memories each typeface conveyed to me, putting them in scenarios where a typical purveyor of such fonts might use them.

Apollo Lighting is a store in Fort Lauderdale, Florida that sells lighting equipment, with a specialization in yacht lighting. They were in need of a new identity with matching business cards. I wanted to give them an identity that was at once minimalistic yet able to convey exactly what they deal in, especially amidst the hustle and bustle of trade conventions the owner said he frequently attended.

The first “O” of Apollo Lighting is also meant to stand alone as an icon on other stationary and applications where needed.

In 2010, I designed the identity and website for Andrée Wallin, an immensely talented digital artist. He has created many fine works, mostly to do with science-fiction concepts like otherworldly landscapes and massive robots, and the details he puts into his paintings are incredible. I knew right away that I wanted to make him a strong logo that would look right at home near his futuristic visions.

My good friend, Carson Perrotti, helped develop the more advanced features of the site. We managed to combine the news blog as well as the portfolio on a single installation of WordPress, and made it simple so that Andrée could continue to update both streams of content.
